HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' WRESTLING: HORSEHEADS GETS TO WORK AS THEY PREPARE FOR NEW SEASON (12 PHOTOS) (2024-11-19)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — It’s a new season for the Horseheads girls’ wrestling team and this year features some new rules as the sport is going to freestyle this season.
“It feels awesome,” Horseheads coach Terri Gill said. “I’m so excited about the freestyle. We have brought in a new coach. Don Bower is filling in for an injured coach and he’s helped out at Elmira College. So, it’s added a wealth of knowledge to our room about freestyle.”
The numbers are solid for Horseheads as they head into the summer.
“We have 15 solid, we may have another one coming, a lot of returners, and young,” Monks said. “We have quite a few who did a lot during the summer and offseason, so most of them are in pretty good shape and they are excited to start fresh and see everyone again.”
As girls’ wrestling gets a few years in, and adds the first official NYSPHSAA Girls’ Wrestling State Championship, many of the wrestlers for Horseheads come in with way more knowledge than they did in years past.
“We only have one newcomer in the room right now, so we are really able to jump to the next level with a lot of this,” Monks said. “They understand wrestling terms. They understand what’s coming at them in practice and meets and their parents understand so that makes a huge difference and we are excited to have the first true girls state title and really be part of the freestyle world.”
