HORSEHEADS — A year after winning STAC and sectional basketball titles the Horseheads girls’ basketball team is back to work preparing for a new season.

“It’s great, it’s obviously coming off a STAC and sectional championship,” Horseheads coach Andy Scott said. “The girls are really fired up. They put in a lot of time in the offseason. Open gyms, summer league, a lot of them playing AAU and stuff. We have a lot of great athletes in other sports as well. We are looking forward to competing every day. Having great practices and trying to make a name for ourselves sin 2024.”

The experience the team gained a year ago can only help.

“It should help,” Scott said. “We have a lot of seasoned veterans, which should help. Obviously, you lose a great leader in (Sophia) Bonnell and a lot of other great leaders in the seniors, the girls who have been around a little bit. They have a taste of winning, they like it. We have a tough schedule. We play night in and night out. We play great teams in our non-league and league so we are just looking forward to a great experience and get these girls moving in the right direction.”

The team has returning senior starters in Jordyn Gross, Megan Wolf and Emma Kamas. They also have three others seniors — Leah Scott, Kaylyn Cook and Jessica Als, who have put in their time and Scott says are putting in the work and looking to play roles in the rotation this year.

The Blue Raiders also have a strong group of younger players coming into varsity this year.

“Love the new kids,” Scott said. “Coach (Jerry) Laney had a 20-0 JV team last year. We had some kids on JV who just both signed D1 offers for lacrosse with (Lexi) Lese and (Lauren) Kozemko. Sami Bonnell who is only in eighth grade, but she averaged like 20 points a game.

“We have some great forwards with (Mya) Piechuch and (Gianna) Hughey who have been working really hard. Pound for pound these girls have really been working their tails off. They worked hard in the summer and they are fitting in perfectly.”
