STSR PRESENTS THE DRAKE HVAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: HORSEHEADS' THOMAS AND CORNING'S MARTINEC (2024-11-18)

Southern Tier Sports Report
There were a lot of great performances this week, leading to some tough choices for the first athlete of the week honors of the season. In the end, it was Corning’s Olivia Martinec and Horseheads’ Bryce Thomas who were named the Southern Tier Sports Report, sponsored by Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Athletes of the Week.

OLIVIA MARTINEC
Corning, Girls’ Cross Country
Led all local runners at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships with a 40th place finish in 19:08.7.

Martinec was second among all Section 4 runners, one spot ahead of Ithaca’s Avery Whittaker, who topped Martinec at sectionals.

Martinec was part of the Hawks’ ninth-place finish as a team.

BRYCE THOMAS
Horseheads, football
Ran for 189 yards and two touchdowns as the Horseheads football team won their first sectional title since 1998.

Thomas scored the first points of the game, on a 15-yard touchdown, and he had a 75-yard touchdown in the fourth to ice the win.
