NYSPHSAA BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY: LOCALS RUN WELL AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (11 PHOTOS) (2024-11-16)
Southern Tier Sports ReportQUEENSBURY — Sebastian Boutwell had a 40th place finish to lead the Corning Hawks at the NYSPHSAA Class A Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
In the Class D race Gavin Meier of Notre Dame made his first trip to the state championships, while Horseheads’ Nicholas Kowal had a PR in the Class A race.
Boutwell was 40th in 16:08.8. Jaxyn Mahoney of Corning was 48th in 16:15.4 and Gregory Homa of Corning was 63rd in 16:34.8.
Kowal had a PR of 16:46.6 to take 76th and Corning’s Nicholas Ferratella was 86th in 17:10.2.
“10 of 11 kids (between the boys and girls) had personal bests on the course,” Corning coach Ray Lawson said of the Hawks runners. “9 of 11 had lifetime 5K PR’s, so we are very pleased with that. First cross country state meet for six of the seven girls, so very good first showing for them.”
Meier finished 84th in the Class D race with a time of 18:48.8.
“Today was not my best race ever, I started way too fast and burned my energy too early,” Meier said. “However, it was a great learning experience because I am familiar with big championship meets.
“IT was the most fun meet I have ever been to. The atmosphere and energy on the course is unmatched. Overall it was an amazing experience.”
The Corning boys team was invited to the New York State Federation Championships next weekend.
