Southern Tier Sports Report
QUEENSBURY — Olivia Martinec had a 40th place finish and the Corning girls took ninth at the Class A race at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships.

Corning had a team score of 217 with Bethlehem winning at 20 points.

Elmira had two top 100 finishers in the race.

Martinec was 40th in 19:08.7, second fastest among Section 4 runners. She was one spot ahead of Ithaca’s Avery Whittaker (19:11.5), who had topped Martinec at sectionals.

Ithaca’s Tsadia Bercuvitz was second in the race in 17:32.4.

Elmira’s Ella Devlin finished 73rd in 20:06.6 and Lauren Roche of Corning was 81st in 20:34.1.

Madelyn Wise of Elmira was 92nd in 20:44.7 and Kyra Gross of Corning was 97th in 21:14.3 with teammate Madie Sweet 99th in 21:30.3 followed by teammate Lillian Deuerlein in 21:31.8. Elianna Schneider was 102nd in 21:35.6. Leila Ianovici was 105th in 21:48.7.

“10 of 11 kids (between the boys and girls) had personal bests on the course,” Corning coach Ray Lawson said of the Hawks runners. “9 of 11 had lifetime 5K PR’s, so we are very pleased with that. First cross country state meet for six of the seven girls, so very good first showing for them.”

Martinec was invited to the girls federation Class A Championship meet. The rest of the girls team will close out their season in the Nike N.Y. Open Race at the same venue, Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls.
