SECTION 4 FOOTBALL: HORSEHEADS LOOKS TO MAKE HISTORY AS THEY TRY AND WIN FIRST SETIONAL TITLE SINCE 1998 (2024-11-15)
Southern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — The Horseheads football team will be looking to make history tonight as they play host to Vestal in the Section 4, Class A Championship.
For Horseheads it has been since 1998 since they last won a sectional title.
“Kids are anxious and excited, ready to play a game for sure,” Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman said. “I think we just want it to be Friday at 6 p.m.”
Being at home just makes the game more special.
“To have the opportunity to play for the section championship in your home stadium is always special,” Hillman said. “The hope is we can give our community something to cheer for.”
The Blue Raiders had last week off after Binghamton forfeited to them, which had some pros and cons for Horseheads.
“It helped with some guys that had some nagging injuries,” Hillman said. “It can hurt because you get out of your weekly routine a little bit. It can make it al little tougher to stay focused. That said, I think our kids have done a good job of keeping the eyes on the prize.”
The Blue Raiders know they face a good team this week.
“Tough, physical team,” Hillman said. “Offensively they are always a big play away. If you miss an assignment, they can make you pay, quickly. Defensively they play physical and downhill.”
Horseheads knows they have to play well this week.
“Offense is about rhythm,” Hillman said. “If we can stay ahead of the sticks and play in rhythm we’ll have success offensively. Defensively, we have to play physical, create turnovers and limit big plays.”
