SECTION 4 GIRLS' SWIMMING: HORSEHEADS WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT SECTIONAL CROWN (24 PHOTOS) (2024-11-10)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportWATKINS GLEN — For the fifth straight year the Horseheads girls’ swimming and diving team came home from the Section 4, Class A championship with a team title.
The five straight sectional titles comes on top of five straight unbeaten dual meet seasons.
Horseheads had a team score of 541.5 followed by Corning at 366.5. Elmira was sixth at 148.5.
In the 200 medley relay Karina Lapierre, Gabrielle Janeski, Anna Lowe and Sibby Lowe won in 1:51.96. Corning was third at 1:58.13 and Elmira was fifth at 2:10.03.
In the 200 free Devin Price of Corning was third at 2:04.67 followed by Horseheads’ Genevieve Carro (2:07.38) and Elise Levantovich (2:08.15). Horseheads’ Lily Hall was seventh in 2:12.57 followed by Corning’s Ellie Ballard (2:12.94).
Jackie Mayotte of Horseheads was 10th in 2:15.10 and Elmira’s Scarlett Hollenbeck was 15th in 2:30.62.
Mia Carro shattered her personal best in the 200 IM in 2:16.79. She was the overall winner, among all classes, in the race making states. Ali Mosher of Horseheads was fourth at 2:25.47 and Lauren Mahon of Corning was seventh in 2:41.29 followed by Ava Klesh of Horseheads (2:41.52).
Ava Knowlton of Horseheads was 12th in 2:45.91 followed by Elmira’s Bridget Hagan (2:46.71).
“I am super excited, I’m proud of myself,” Carro said of the 200 IM.
After her time popped on the board there was hugs, and smiles from Carro.
“I was just in shock that I went that fast,” Carro said. “I was just really proud of myself and that was my goal to drop time.
“I just wanted to beat my best time of 2:18 and I did. I went two seconds faster than that.”
Getting a good time early in the meet set the tone for the day for Carro.
“I am very happy because it gives me a positive attitude for the rest of the meet,” Carro said.
Anna Lowe won the 50 free in a state-cut time of 24.12 followed by teammate Sibby Lowe (24.59( and Alexys Nale of Corning (25.68). Corning’s Maria Kuksenkova was sixth in 26.34.
Morgan Dahlman of Corning was ninth in 27.64 followed by MacKenzie Grover of Horseheads in 27.74. Corning’s Alyssa Reimsnyder was 12th in 28.03 followed by Elmira’s Ava Sherman (28.41) and Horseheads’ Lillian Spicher (28.84). Ellmira’s Eleanor Hagan was 16th in 30.00.
Sibby Lowe won the 100 fly in 1:00.34 followed by Carro in 1:01.61. Gabrielle Janeski was fourth in 1:05.84 followed by Corning’s Reimsnyder (1:05.95) and Elmira’s Madelyn Cavalier (1:07.17). Nicole Miller of Corning was ninth in 1:11.55 followed by Olivia Schwab of Horseheads in 1:12.55. Elmira’s Aubrey Newkirk was 12th in 1:17.76 followed by teammates Kaydence Green (1:17.95) and Bridget Hagan (1:20.04).
Anna Lowe won the 100 free in 54.36 and Price was third in 56.97. Kuksenkova was fifth in 58.51 and Beck Hutcheson of Horseheads was seventh in 59.75. Reese Conway of Corning was ninth in 59.94 followed by Grover (1:00.20), Corning’s Erika Liu (1:02.34) and Hailey Stanton of Horseheads (1:03.11). Elmira’s Maren Novotny was 14th in 1:04.67.
Lapierre was third in the 500 free in 5:45.46 followed by Levantovich in 5:46.21. Hall was sixth in 5:52.38 followed by Ballard (5:52.77). Mayotte was 10th in 5:58.85 followed by Sherman (6:14.79). Grace Kio of Corning was 16th in 6:54.66.
Horseheads won the 200 free relay in a state-cut time of 1:40.26 with Corning third (1:48.69) and Elmira was sixth in 2:01.50.
Lapierre won the 100 back in 1:00.73 followed by Mosher (1:02.63). Conway was fifth in 1:06.11 followed by Miller (1:06.80) and Dahlman was eighth in 1:08.46.
Cavalier was ninth in 1:08.39 followed by Caroline Wilcox of Horseheasds in 1:12.60. Schwab was 12th in 1:13.58 and Hollenbeck was 14th in 1:18.77.
Nale won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.28 and Janeski was fourth in 1:15 wile Genevieve Carro of Horseheads was seventh 1:19.08.
Hutcheson was ninth in 1:21.06 and Klesh was 11th in 1:23.10 followed by Mahon in 1:23.10 and Kio was 15th 1:@6.32 and Newkirk in 16th in 1:27.17.
Horseheads was second in the 400 free relay in 3:52.63 and Corning was fourth in 3:59.73 followed by Elira (4:23.96).
Notre Dame’s girls were sixth in Class C at 202.5. Watkins Glen/Odessa won at 448.5.
Notre Dame was sixth in the 200 medley relay in 2:16.40 and Ella Cain of Notre Dame was 14th in 2:29.82 in the 200 free.
In the 200 IM Leah Gonzalez was in seventh 2:40.27. Charlotte Welliver was third in the 50 free in 27.47 and Alexis Collins was seventh in 28.29.
Hannah Gonzalez was eighth in the 100 fly in 1:20.91. Welliver was seventh in the 100 free in 1:02.66 and Collins was ninth in 1:03.12 and Isabella Mashwske was 16th in 1:08.16.
Leah Gonzalez was fifth in the 500 free in 6:07.58 and Hannah Gonzalez was ninth in 6:31.12.
The Crusaders took fifth in the 200 free relay in 1:59.34.
Mashewske was fifth in the 100 back in 1:15.43. Cain was 13th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:31.36. The Crusaders took fourth in the 400 free relay in 4:22.57.
