COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY: LOCALS FIND SUCCESS IN COLLEGE AT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2024-11-04)
Southern Tier Sports ReportA number of former local high school standouts are wrapping up their college cross country seasons with conference championship appearances.
Corning graduate Matt Geisel had a top 20 finish for Buffalo at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Gensel finished in 24:51.62.
Gensel’s time beat his personal best (24:54.3) by just over two seconds.
Another Corning graduate, Gabriel Cornfield, finished 45th in 25:45.46. Another Corning grad, Chloe Freeland, finished 84th in the women’s race in 23:28.91, a personal best.
Corning graduate Sarah Lawson ran for Syracuse at the ACC Championships. Lawson finished 129th in the meet at 21:52.7.
She had a time of 21:01.7 at the Princeton Fall Classic and was 71st at the Paul Short Run in 21:06.1.
Another Corning graduate, Ashton Bange, finished 50th at the Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships for Dartmouth in 24:28.1.
Bange was 11th at the Maribel Sanchez Southern Invite in 26:14.9 and he was 151st in the Paul Shot Run in 25:05, while he was 121st in the Princeton Fall Classic in 24:35.1.
Corning graduate Cassandra Collins was 118th and Elmira graduate Payton Calkins finished 121st for Canisius at the MAAC Cross Country Championships.
Another Corning graduate, Faithe Ketchum, had a top-50 finish for James Madison at the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships.
Ketchum finished 49th in 19:07.6. The Corning graduate was 171st at the Paul Short Run in 23:55.4.
Notre Dame graduate Piper Young had a top 70 finish for Chatham at the PAC Championships, finishing in 69th place in the race. Young finish in 27:48.8.
Another Corning graduate, Tevin McLaren, finished 27th for RPI at the Liberty League Championships out of 111 runners.
RPI dominated the meet, having four of the top five finishers and seven of the top 10.
At the America East Championships Elmira graduate Vicky Mordvinova finished 18th in 18:09. She was top 20 in a race out of 83 runners.
At the Vermont Fall Foliage Cross Country Invite, Mordvinova was a part of Binghamton sweeping the men’s and women’s titles. It was the first time since 2021 Binghamton’s men and women swept titles at an invitational. Mordvinova finished 14th in 18:33.
