While she still has two more seasons left of high school lacrosse, Horseheads junior Lexi Lese already has her college plans figured out as she’ll play Division I at Niagara.

“I went on my visit and felt like home,” Lese said. “I loved the coaches and I loved the coaching style they had. Got to meet a lot of the girls and they were so nice. Academically they had what I was looking for. Their lacrosse team, it’s a very good program and I’m so excited to be a part of it.”

For Lese getting a chance to play in state is special.

“I’m happy now,” she said. “Hopefully a lot of my family will be able to come and watch me play when I’m at my games and only being three hours away, and that’s awesome.”

It’s also a successful program that Lese is joining.

“They are reigning MAC champs and they went to the NCAA Tourney last year, so that’s exciting,” Lese said.

The Niagara program has a bunch of athletes from the region, including Maddy Gill from Corning.

While Lese didn’t know Gill in high school she got to meet her on her visit.

“I didn’t (know here), she’s a little older than me, but I did get to meet her on my visit and she’s awesome, I loved her.”

Lese will go into college as an attacker.

“That as the goal to play attack at the next level,” Lese said. “They said they really liked my speed and quickness which is good and my versatility on the field and how flexible I am.”

While she has made her college choice, there is plenty of work to do still.

“This is kind of the work doesn’t end here, it just begins,” Lese said. “It is going to start getting busy with everything. There is always more work to do. There is always places to iimprove.

“It is definitely a weight lifted off my shoulders. I really enjoyed the whole process and everything about it. I loved the whole process. I wanted to take it slow and that’s what I did. I wanted to look at all my options to make sure I made the right decision, and I definitely did.”

For Lese getting a chance to play D1 is special.

“It’s so exciting,” she said. “I think it was definitely a dream for me my whole life, that was the goal to play lacrosse in college, D1 was the main goal. I think a lot of young athletes strive for that. Super excited, definitely dreams come true.”

And, Lese will get a chance to play against some of her current, and former, teammates at the collegiate level one day.

“I am so excited, all my teammates are awesome,” she said. “It is a competition, but at the end of the day, we are all best friends. It’s great being able to play them and compete against them and after the game see them and talk to them and you get a sense of being home when you talk to them, and old times. All my teammates are so supportive and all my coaches were so supportive through my whole process.”
