SECTION 4 GIRLS' SOCCER: ND SCORES 2 SECOND HALF GOALS TO WIN SECTIONAL TITLE (24 PHOTOS) (2024-11-02)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportONEONTA — The Notre Dame girls’ soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to top Trumansburg 2-0 to win the Section 4, Class C Championship on Saturday.
Jhamairah Maxwell scored off an MK Young right off the opening kick of the second half and Makenna Keough scored with four and a half minutes left in the game on a penalty kick after a Trumansburg hand ball in the box.
“Really proud for the girls stepping up,” Notre Dame coach Joe Picco said. “We talked all week about who we were done. The tank needed to be empty and they did just that. Shout out to my daughter Gabby Picco, who drove up from Philadelphia and helped us out immensely on the defensive side of the ball. In our family it’s always been about soccer and this is just another instance to add to that.”
Gabby Picco is a starter for Division I LaSalle and was herself a standout in the IAC in high school, playing at Waverly.
After a slow start, the Crusaders came out strong in the second half.
“We took us out of our game plan in the first half and we formulated a plan at halftime to see if we could catch them on their back and we did just that with the first minute of the kickoff in the second half and Jhamairah scored a great goal.
“Couldn’t be more proud of all the groups of kids that we have at Notre Dame this year. A little on the younger side, but they’ve always stepped up to make sure that our seniors get one more game.”
Keough is one of those seniors, and she’s excited to continue her career into another week.
“We are beyond excited to be sectional champions,” Keough said. “I’m extremely proud of the entire team. We all left the tank on empty. Everyone was working and doing their job. I think we try to come off of halftime and get a quick goal or two because after the first half we know the other team’s style of play and how to adapt.
“I think our next game is regionals and we’re very excited that we can hang around for another week. I know the seniors are so grateful and proud that the team has come this far and we get another game.”
For Young it’s special to be a part of this team
“It is so exciting to be sectional champs,” she said. “This is honestly an honor to be a part of a team and school that has accomplished this achievement. I am so proud of everyone, especially the eighth grader who have really stepped up and taken on a roll that isn’t easy at all.
“I am very happy with how relentless the team is. NO one ever gives up and that is one of the reasons we can accomplish so much. I am so excited to go to states. This is not something that happens a lot, so I am ready to take it all in and play with the people I consider my best friends.”
Edison is back at Oneonta for the regional final at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Cincinnatus, the Section III champion.
