EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL: EDISON QUALIFIES FOR PLAYOFFS FOR FIRST TIME IN 17 YEARS (13 PHOTOS) (2024-10-26)
Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA HEIGHTS — For the first time in 17 years the Edison football team is headed to the Section 4 playoffs.
Edison beat Greene 38-6 in eight-man football on Saturday, clinching their first playoff spot since 2007.
“Wow, really special for us to make the playoffs,” Edison coach Kyle Erickson said. “We have one regular season game left. For us to accomplish a goal at the start of the season is great.”
The Spartans turned in a strong defensive effort in the win.
“We struggled a bit on offense, made a lot of mistakes and will improve for this week,” Erickson said. “We had a great defensive game and didn’t allow them to do much today. We played well, but would love to limit the mistakes.”
Greg Golden started the scoring for Edison with a 12-yard touchdown run at 2:23 of the opening quarter.
Paxton Hoover hauled in an 11-yard touchdown from Drew Slaven five seconds into the second quarter and Slaven then ran for a one-yard scored at 9:02.
Hoover then caught a six-yard touchdown pass with 6:07 left in the half as Edison led 24-0 at the half.
Reyes McAtee had a nine-yard touchdown run at 8:22 of the third quarter and McAtee caught the two-point try from Slaven.
Zimear Young had a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter to cap the scoring.
McAtee ran for 47 yards and Golden had 46 yards on the ground. Young ran for 42 yards and Slaven ran for 16 yards.
Slaven threw for 76 yards and Zachary Piper had two grabs for 40 yards, while Hoover had two catches for 17 yards and McAtee had a nine-yard catch and Golden had a 10-yard catch.
Mason Mawhir had 10 tackles in the game and Young had seven tackles, while Hoover had five tackles.
Talon LaPlante and Golden each had four tackles, with a sack, and Piper had a sack.
