SECTION 4 FOOTBALL: CORNING SET FOR THURSDAY NIGHT GAME AT ITHACA (2024-10-24)

Southern Tier Sports Report
It’s a rare Thursday night game as the Corning Hawks head to Ithaca to take on the Little Red at 6 p.m. tonight.

Corning is coming off a win over Elmira a week ago, while Ithaca beat Newark Valley.

“Pleased that we earned the win (against Elmira), but know that it’s only one game,” Corning coach Mike Johnston Jr. said. “We have turned the page and are focused on Ithaca. We need to continue to improve each week and be consistent with the aspects of the game that we are excelling at.”

While the schedule is a little different this week, it also means an extra week off before next week’s game.

“It just means that the coaching staff has to move up our preparation and game plan up one day,” Johnston Jr. said. “We changed our practice structure slightly, but at this point in the season you should have an idea of what the expectations are and a day of rest near the end of the season isn’t a bad thing.”

The Hawks know that Ithaca is a younger team, with some good talent.

“Really good mix of seniors and underclassmen,” Johnston Jr. said. “Ithaca has a bright future. They play quite a few ninth and 10th grade skilled players each game.”

The Hawks know they have to play their game each week.

“We are all about execution, assignment and alignment,” Johnston Jr. said. “We focus, and will continue to focus on the fundamentals. Games are won with blocking and tackling.”
