SECTION 4 FOOTBALL: HORSEHEADS HITS THE ROAD TO VESTAL FOR KEY DIVISION GAME (2024-10-18)

VESTAL — Coming off back-to-back wins over Elmira and Corning it’s time for the Horseheads Blue Raiders to get into league play starting this week at Vestal.

“Kids are excited to get into league play,” Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman said. “Next three weeks are really big for us.”

The Blue Raiders know they face a tough test this week.

“Defending Class A Section 4 champions,” Hillman said. “I think that says it all. We need to be ready to go from the start.”

This year was only the second time the Blue Raiders beat Elmira and Corning in the same year. Those wins give Horseheads added confidence as they head into this week.

“I think anytime you get on a little streak it’s great for the confidence,” Hillman said. “You just have to remember that each week is different and to not lose focus. We play good team after good team. If you let your focus down, bad things can hppen.”

The Blue Raiders know how important this stretch of games is.

“So important,” Hillman said. “These next three weeks we have the opportunity to fight for a division championship and home field in the playoffs. It starts tonight and hopefully we can get off on the right foot.”

The Blue Raiders know they have to focus on their game this week.

“Discipline and staying with the plan,” Hillman said of the key. “Don’t let things out of our control change our mindset. Control what we can control, play fast and physical.”
