IAC GIRLS' BASKETBALL: EDISON GIRLS SCRIMMAGE ELMIRA AS THEY PREPARE FOR AN EXCITING SEASON (24 PHOTOS) (2021-11-23)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA — As the Edison girls’ basketball team preps for the new season they have some high hopes for this year.

“We are going to be pretty good,” Edison coach Chris Mallette said. “I’ve got a good mix of old and young. We are not going to have a lot of buddies, but we are going to play hard and I think we are going to have a chance to make sectionals and maybe have a home game.”

The Spartans had their first scrimmage on Monday as they headed to Elmira.

For Edison having a more normal start to the season is special. But, what’s even nicer is that the Spartans will be able to play in front of fans this season.

“It’s nice to be back on time,” Mallette said. “I am actually looking forward to having the fans back in attendance more than anything else. It was kind of off last year with playing last year in silent gyms, but at least we got games in.”

Mallette knows his players are ready for the season.

“I think they are super excited,” he said. “I played all last year with eight and I have six of them back, so they have a good grasp of what we are trying to do.

“We had a little success this year and I can’t wait for their parents to be able to be there in person and share that excitement and enthusiasm with them.”

While last year wasn’t a normal season it was a chance for a lot of the Edison players to get experience.

“It absolutely helps us a lot,” Mallette said. “With everything going on last year I played up so I played Elmira, Corning and Horseheads. So, we are going to be ready for the whole IAC which is always a tough league and we shouldn’t be scared of anyone we play.”
