IAC GIRLS' SOCCER: EDISON TOPS WHITNEY POINT FOR FIRST WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY (2024-10-09)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS — It was a milestone night for the Edison girls’ soccer team as they beat Whitney Point 2-0 on Tuesday for the first win in program history.

“Another special and very exciting first tonight as we earned our first victory as a girls’ varsity program,” Edison coach Kevin Weber said. “As coaches, we’re just incredibly proud of the work the girls have put in throughout the season to allow us to get to this point.”

Hannah Lasko scored the first goal for Edison at 25:13 of the first half off a Mia Huffner assist and she scored again 34 seconds into thes econd half.

Edison had 15 shots and five corners and Whitney Point had one shot and no corners.

Kaylynn Tarby had a save for Edison and Calleigh Nichols had seven saves for Whitney Point.

“After battling through what was a horribly brutal schedule for a first-year program this season, we found ourselves in a game tonight where the speed of play was much more relative to our own. This allowed for us to achieve the level of passing, communication, and offensive possession that we have been striving for. We controlled the midfield extremely well and had their final third under pressure for the majority of the game.

“After a few nervy touches led to some lost chances early, Mia Huffner was able to slot a great through ball to Hannah Lasko, who was able to beat one defender and find the back of the net. I really think that goal relieved some of the pressure the girls were feeling and was a shot of confidence for us, as our passing and movement only continued to improve from that point on. Getting a second goal just :34 into the second half was also huge, as Lasko finished a bit of a scrambled chance in front that here forward pressure had created. It allowed us to continue building in confidence, while really halting any momentumthat could have built from the break.”
