SECTION 4 FOOTBALL: CORNING FALLS FOR FIRST TIME AS CNS BACK RUSHES FOR 7 SCORES (2024-10-04)

CORNING — The Corning Hawks ran into an elite running back and a talented Cicero-North Syracuse football team on Friday night, falling 58-36.

Syracuse commit Anthony Johnson ran for around 300 yards and seven touchdowns in the CNS win.

“Number 21 Anthony Johnson was unbelievable,” Corning coach Mike Johnston Jr. said. “He put on a highlight reel.”

For the Hawks it was a matchup against one of the best running backs they have seen in a long time. Johnson entered the game with 553 yards on the ground in four games, and he had the overtime game winner a week ago for the North Stars.

Johnson scored the first touchdown of the game at 10:19 of the opening quarter and Jakob Purdy hit an extra point to make it 7-0 Northstars.

Corning, which ran for 398 yards themselves in the game, got a three-yard score from Brenden Jardin-Reed at 6:37 of the opening quarter to cut the deficit to 7-6.

Johnson answered back for the Northstars at 5:45 and Purdy hit the extra point to make it 14-6.

Corning tied the game just over two minutes later when Jardin-Reed scored on a 36-yard run at 3:29 and James Freeman had the two-point run.

CNS took the lead to end the quarter with 56 seconds left in the quarter when Owen Ellis scored to make it 20-14.

Corning took the lead in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Clayton Smith at 8:51 and Smith had the two-point try to put the Hawks up 22-20.

CNS got another score from Johnson at 4:55 and Johnson had the two-point conversion to make it 28-22 at the half.

Johnson extended the lead in the third quarter as he scored with 7:00 left in the quarter and then converted the two-point try to make it 36-22.

Corning cut into the deficit with 2:54 left in the quarter on a 12-yard run by James Freeman and then Freeman had the two-point run to make it 36-30.

Johnson scored two more times in the quarter to help CNS start to pull away. He scored with 1:51 left in the quarter and Marcus Reed had the two-point run and then he scored with 34 seconds left in the quarter and Purdy hit the extra point to make it 51-30.

Taj Sides scored with 7:17 left in the game for Corning on a 28-yard run to make it 51-36 and Johnson capped the scoring with 3:53 left in the game and Purdy hit the extra point.

Freeman ran 17 times for 103 yards for the Hawks and Jardin-Reed had 14 carries for 98 yards, while Smith ran 16 times ford 67 yards and Sides ran seven times for 67 yards. Tahj Haynes ran for 28 yards, Noah Hutter ran for 25 yards for the Hawks and Freddie Clark gained 10 yards.

Ian Harpster had one completion for 36 yards to Jardin-Reed in the game.
