SECTION 4 FOOTBALL: HORSEHEADS HOSTS OWEGO ON HOMECOMING IN BATTLE OF STATE RANKED TEAMS (2024-09-27)

Southern Tier Sports Report
HORSEHEADS — It’s a big night for the Horseheads football team as they celebrate homecoming, while welcoming Owego in a matchup of state-ranked teams on Friday night.

Horseheads comes in at 2-1 on the year and ranked 22nd in Class A, while Owego is 2-0 and ranked 13th in Class B.

“It’s always an exciting week for the kids and the students,” Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman said.

The Blue Raiders know a key is staying focused on the game and not letting all that goes with Homecoming be a distraction.

“It’s extremely important,” Hillman said. “There is so much external stuff going on it’s easy to lose focus. It really takes a lot of discipline to keep your eyes on the prize and not get caught up with all the window dressing that comes with Homecoming week.”

Last week was a tough one for the Blue Raiders, as they fell on the road against defending Class C state champion Waverly.

“It was a tough loss, and we’ll see how they respond,” Hillman said. “As I sad earlier in the season dealing with adversity ir our biggest hurdle. I thought we let some things in that game cloud our focus. We need to do a better job of that.”

The Blue Raiders know they face another tough test this week.

“Big, and physical on both sides of the ball,” Hillman said. “They will punch you in the mouth. It will be a big test especially after last week. Excited to see how our kids respond.”

The key this week is simple for the Blue Raiders, try and win the football game.

“Score one more point than they do,” Hillman said.
