IAC GIRLS SOCCER: NOTRE DAME WINS 2ND GAME IN TWO DAYS (2024-09-19)

Southern Tier Sports Report
SOUTHPORT — Playing a second day in a row the Notre Dame girls’ soccer team picked up a 4-1 win over Union Springs on Thursday night.

“We were playing on tired legs tonight with 10 of the 11 playing almost 75 minutes each last night in a physical match against SVE,” Notre Dame coach Joe Picco said.

With 20 minutes left in the first half MK Young took a great ball behind the back line from Jhamariah Maxwell and Young held off a defender to be 1v1 with the goalie putting Notre Dame up 1-0.

Minutes later McKennaKeough played a well-played ball off a corner to Young for the goal.

Not seven minutes later Zoe McClellan played a great cross to the far post and Leah McConnell walked the ball into the goal.

“We lost our focus in the last moments of the final minutes of the half and USPB has a corner put in off a misplayed ball by the goalie,” Picco said. “We talked all year about flipping the switch and making sure we don’t lose focus in moments.

“This is simply the case in the las moments of the half Giving up a corner and losing our sense of urgency. I realize the girls are young and I have to continually remind myself it is part of the progression and urging myself to be more patient.”

McClelland had the fourth goal of the game in the 14th minute of the second half off an excellent placed ball to her feet from Young.

“Our first 39 of the first half were probably the best half of soccer we played this season,” Picco said. “I will keep on working with them with their focus. Playing on tired legs will cuase those issues to be more apparent. It will serve us well to have a day off.”
