IAC BOYS' SOCCER: ND DROPS HARD-FOUGHT 2-1 GAME AT SVEC (2024-09-17)

Southern Tier Sports Report
SPENCER — After a first half dominated by strong goaltending, SVEC scored a pair of second-half goals to top Notre Dame 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Notre Dame played a man down for the final 25 minutes of the game after a red card.

“The boys created lots of chances and had plenty of corners with the ball in the opponent’s half for the majority of the game,” Notre Dame coach Josh Miller said. “I am proud of the boys for the way they handled themselves and continued to play and create chances going a man down.

“Finn Schweizer played a fantastic game at center back.”

“This was a physical game between two evenly matched teams,” SVEC coach Jason Banks said. “Both keepers played well and made some quality saves to keep their teams in the game.”

It was a scoreless first half, but Claas Huenecke scored six minutes into the second half off a Kyle Jantz assist to make it 1-0.

Notre Dame needed just one minute to get the equalizer as Francisco Alvarez-Sostre scored off an Anthony Barkley assist to make it 1-1.

The game stayed tied until the final 20 minutes when Huenecke scored off a Noah Banks assist in the 25th minute for the game winner.

“Overall a good performance by our team tonight,” Bannks said. “The coaching staff was proud of how the boys handled themselves at the end with a lead. They pulled together to work hard to limit Ellmira’s chances to equalize.

“This win will give the team some positive momentum going forward with a tough week.”

Jackson Potter had eight saves for Notre Dame and Simon Irvin also had eight saves for SVEC.

Shot totals were nearly equal with SVEC firing off 10 shots and Notre Dame taking nine.

Note Dame hosts Lansing at noon on Saturday.
