HORSEHEADS — The Horseheads Blue Raiders scored early, and never trailed as they picked up a 2-1 win over Corning on Monday night.

Elijah Friend scored in the first half on a flying header off an assist from Ben Church.

Dominic Hugg scored off an assist from Keenan McCarthy with just four minutes left in the game.

Corning’s Seaver Nellis netted a goal in the final minute for Corning.

Horseheads goalie Gavin McInerney stopped a Corning penalty kick in the second half when the game was 1-0. McInerney finished with seven saves in goal.

“Corning is always a competitive match,” Horseheads coach Mark Mucci said. “Just super proud of the effort put forth tonight by my guys. Truly a team effort and hats off to Gavin McInerney who made several key stops including the PK stop that kept the match in our favor.”

Ben Hufnagel had four saves in goal for Corning.

Corning had eight shots and 13 corner kicks and Horseheads had six shots and three corners in the game.

“Horseheads played extremely hard tonight,” Corning coach Chad Freelove said. “We moved the ball extremely well box to box, but they made it very difficult to move into our attacking third.

“They were well organized. We will get back to training tomrorow and be prepared for another tough contest Wednesday vs. Ithaca.”
