ELMIRA — It’s a new year, with a new coach, but back to the normal November start as the Elmira girls’ basketball team prepares for the season.
“It is great,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “It was so abnormal last year starting in February. It went quick and there were so many protocols. Obviously you still have to deal with the protocols, but it’s nice to be November. We are a week behind, everything is a week behind this year, which is weird, but it’s November and it feels right and that’s the best part.”
A normal offseason gave the girls a chance to get plenty of work in to prepare for the season, and the girls took advantage of the opportunities.
“It was great, and this group, especially our older girls, had a great offseason,” Allen said. “They came to everything. We had a strength and conditioning program for six weeks in September and we had great attendance.
“We had open gyms since then and I can’t be happier as a coach, especially as a new coach coming in, I can’t be happier with that kind of attendance.”
For the Express there is a good mix of youth and experience on the varsity team this year.
“So far, so good,” Allen said. “We are a little young at the JV level. We have a good mix of veterans at youth at the varsity level. We have a great group as far as experience.
“We have a nice mixture of experience and some skill. I’m excited with what we see. It’s day number two, but I’m really excited about the potential.”
