THE SPORTS REPORTS: WELLSBORO'S HOPRICH NAMED ALL-REGION 'GIRLS NEWCOMER OF THE SPRING;' CORNING'S SMITH MAKES THE LIST (2024-07-02)

Wellsboro freshman sprinter Piper Hoprich got better and better as the season progressed, eventually ending up on the podium at States in a pair of events. She is The Sports Reports’ 2024 All-Region “Girls Newcomer of the Spring.”

Hoprich was second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the NTL meet, then won District 4 titles in those same events.

Hoprich had a phenomenal showing at the PIAA Track & Field Championships, bringing home a bronze medal in the 200 and a fourth-place medal in the 100.

Emelia Smith, 7th-grader, Corning softball: Smith helped lead the Hawks to the Class AAA state title, batting cleanup through the postseason. She hit .383 with a .418 on-base percentage, and had two doubles, 13 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Ashlyn Dalton, freshman, Owego flag football: Dalton was a key contributor on both sides of the ball for the Section IV, Division 2 champion River Hawks. On offense, she caught 35 passes for 531 yards and 14 TDs, ran for another score and rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries, and scored three extra points. Defensively, she made 33 tackles, 19 sacks, 28 QB pressures and five deflections. She also returned 11 punts for 155 yards.

Gretchan Hiley, freshman, Athens softball: Gretchan Hiley led her team at the plate with a .458 average including a team-high 28 runs scored, 12 doubles, and 13 RBI. In limited action in the circle she had a 0.72 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings.

Olivia Gee, freshman, Williamson softball: Gee post a 7-2 record with a 2.49 ERA and struck out 49 in 51 innings.. At the plate, Gee was a valuable lead-off hitter with an on-base-percentage of .355 and a .234 batting average with 15 base hits, including a home run and a double, 23 runs scored and seven RBI.

Izzy Larson, freshman, Towanda track & field: Much like cross-country, Larson got to states her freshman year, making it to Shippensburg in the mile, while also keying their strong 4x800 relay team.

Jaylee Ward, freshman, Canton softball: Ward hit .425 with 22 runs scored, five doubles, and two home runs.

Jill Lewis, senior, Owego softball: Lewis returned to the diamond after a two-year absence, and hit .333 with a.469 on-base percentage and a .385 slugging percentage. She contributed two doubles, five runs, seven RBI and 10 walks, and had 10 putouts and one assist without an error.

Lillie Maynard, junior, NEB track & field: Maynard proved to be one of the best mid-distance runners in the league, and helped the Panthers’ 4x800 to a district medal.

Emily Shiner, sophomore, Tioga softball: Shiner hit .456 with two doubles, 15 RBI, 23 runs scored and six stolen bases. She walked five times and had a .493 on-base percentage and a .485 slugging percentage.

Kaitlyn Keith, 7th-grader, Newark Valley softball: The only 7th-grader named to an IAC first team, she carried a .333 batting average a .533 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage for a 1.104 OPS. She had five extra-base hits, 22 runs, 15 RBI, 17 walks and 14 stolen bases.

Kaylin Twedt, 8th-grader, Waverly track & field: Twedt made an immediate impact for the Wolverines earning three first-place finishes, including the 200-meter dash, and a second-place finish in the 100 in her first varsity meet at Corning. At the Class C Championships, Twedt was sixth in the 100-meter dash, and ran on two medal-winning relays.

Anika Smith, sophomore, Newark Valley track & field: Smith competed in the Section IV state qualifier in the 100, 200 and 400, and the pole vault, matching her PR in the latter to place eighth in Division 2. She won the pole vault and placed second in the 200 and 400 at the IAC South Large School divisional meet.
