COLLEGE SOFTBALL: CITES HELPS VILLANOVA TOP NO. 12 ARKANSAS TO MAKE FIRST EVER REGIONAL FINAL (2024-05-18)
Southern Tier Sports ReportHorseheads graduate Tess Cites and the Villanova softball team picked up just their second and third NCAA Tournament wins in program history on Saturday.
Villanova fell to No. 17 Arizona 14-3 on Friday, but came back Saturday and beat Southeast Missouri State, and then beat No. 16 Arkansas in an elimination game, 7-2.
With the win over Arkansas the Wildcats make the regional final for the first time in program history. Arkansas was a 12 seed and Villanova becomes the first team in this year's tournament to knock out a seeded team.
It's the third ever win over an SEC team for Villanova and the team's first win over a top-25 team this year.
Cites had a 2-for-3 game against Arkansas. She had a double in the game, with two RBI and a run scored.
Cites was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in the game against Southeast Missouri.
The team will look to make the Super Regional on Sunday, needing a pair of wins over Arizona to advance.
