HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: CORNING LEADS EARLY, BUT FALLS TO UNBEATEN VESTAL IN STAC FINAL (2024-05-14)
Southern Tier Sports ReportVESTAL — The Corning softball team got out to an early lead, but three home runs by Vestal helped the Golden Bears rally to capture the STAC Championship, 7-3.
Vestal is 18-0 on the year and is the No. 1 ranked team in the state in Class AA. Corning is 10-6 and ranked 22nd in AAA. They are the top seed for AAA sectionals and face Elmira in the championship game on May 25 at Greenlight Grand Slam Park in Binghamton.
Corning jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Vestal scored three in the third, a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to rally for the win.
In the bottom of the first inning Matti Johnston walked to lead off the inning and stole second and third and scored on a Peyton Sullivan single.
In the second inning Kendall Curreri reached on a dropped third strike and Lauren DeRosa sacrificed her to second and reached on an error. Emelia Smith singled home both runners to make it 3-0 Corning.
In the top of the third inning Vestal tied the game as Caitlyn Petteys hit a two-run home run and Lauren Policare followed with a solo shot.
Vestal took the lead in the fourth as Chloe Burkhard singled home a run and in the fifth Aubrey Rogers singled home a run before Allie Policare hit a two-run home run.
Johnston threw the complete game for Corning, striking out three. Smith, Sophie Schoonover and Sullivan had hits and Johnston, Curreri and DeRosa had runs, while Smith had two RBI and Sullivan had one.
Ryleigh Storer threw a three-hitter for Vestal, striking out nine and allowing three hits and an earned run.
Kendall Brady, Burkhard, Adrienne Mayes and Maggie Costello had two hits each for Vestal.
