HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: SEVEN RUNS FINAL TWO INNINGS LEAD CORNING TO STAC FINAL (2024-05-11)

CHENANGO VALLEY — The Corning Hawks softball team is headed to the STAC final after a 10-4 win over Susquehanna Valley on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks scored seven runs in the final two innings to give them the win. Corning had five runs in the seventh inning.

Corning got off to a fast start with three runs in the top of the first inning. Matti Johnson led off the game with a double and Sophia Polzella walked. Peyton Sullivan then doubled home Johnston and Daphne Sherman walked. Sullivan scored on a wild pitch. Sherman moved to second on a fielder’s choice by Sophie Schoonover, who reached on the play and Sherman took third as Kendall Curreri walked. After a walk was recorded Emelia Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to score Sherman.

Susquehanna Valley tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with three runs.

The game stayed 3-3 until the top of the sixth inning.

In the sixth inning Schoonover hit a one-out single. Schoonover moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Curreri. Lauren DeRosa tripled home Schoonover and Smith singled home DeRosa to make it 5-3.

In the seventh Johnston doubled to lead off the inning and Polzella then doubled home Johnston. Sullivan walked and Polzella stole home to make it 7-3. Schoonover reached on an error, scoring Sullivan. Curreri then hit an RBI single and Curreri scored on a ground out.

Susquehanna Valley got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, and that’s how the game ended.

Johnston worked all seven innings, striking out nine and allowing five hits and four runs, just one earned.

Johnston had two doubles and scored two runs and DeRosa had the triple, while Polzella and Sullivan had doubles.

Schoonover, Cureert and Smith all had hits for Corning in the game.

Johnston, Schoonover and Sullivan each scored two runs and Polzella, Sherman, Curreri and DeRosa all scored runs in the game.

The Hawks host Vestal in the STAC Championship game at 5 p.m. Monday.
