Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — The Elmira Express opened their new stadium, but it was the Corning Hawks who celebrated at the end of the night, as the Hawks topped Elmira 18-2.
Corning, ranked 12th in the state in Class AAA, scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to break open a game that was 4-2 at the time.
Matti Johnston had three hits, with a home run and a double, five RBI and four runs scored, and Peyton Sullivan, Emelia Smith and Sophie Schoonover all had two hits in the game.
Schoonover had a double, two RBI and two runs scored and Sullivan had three RBI and two runs scored, while Smith had two RBI and a run scored.
Daphne Sherman had a double, two RBI and three runs scored in the game and Lauren DeRosa had a hit and scored three runs.
Sophia Polzella and Kendall Curreri scored runs in the game.
Sullivan worked two innings, striking out one and allowing three hits. Johnston worked three innings of one-hit, shutout ball, striking out one.
Addison Taft had two hits, with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Elmira and Lily Cornacchio and Ava Sherman each had hits. Cornacchio scored a run and Addisyn Chorney had an RBI.
Ava Cornacchio worked 3 2/3 innings, striking out three. Aleida Agosto got one out and Madison Smith worked an inning, striking out one.
