HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: CORNING GOES 1-1 ON THE DAY AT MARY TESTA TOURNEY, HITTING 3 HRS IN WIN OVER CV (2024-04-27)

CHENANGO VALLEY — The Corning Hawks went 1-1 on the day at the Mary Testa Tournament at Chenango Valley High School on Saturday.

After a 7-2 loss to Abington Heights in the first game the Hawks beat Chenango Valley 16-3 in the second game.

Corning scored 10 runs in the opening inning against Chenango Valley in the win.

Corning had 18 hits and three home runs in the game.

Kayleigh Sparks, Lauren DeRosa and Sophia Polzella all had home runs in the game.

Polzella had the home run, an RBI and two runs scored, DeRosa had two hits, three RBI and three runs scored and Sparks had the home run and two RBI.

Matti Johnston had three hits, with two triples, three RBI and two runs scored and Sophie Schoonover had a double, a triple and a run scored.

Kendall Curreri had two hits, with an RBI and two runs scored and Daphne Sherman was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

Peyton Sullivan had a hit, an RBI and a run scored and Emelia Smith was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Johnston worked four innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine. Sullivan threw a hitless, scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

In the first game Abington Heights scored all their runs in the first four innings on the way to the win.

Corning got three hits from Smith in the game with a run scored and Johnston, Sullivan, Sherman and Curreri all had hits. Sherman and Smith each had doubles in the game and Sullivan and Sherman had RBI, while Sullivan and Smith scored runs.

Sullivan went the distance on the mound, striking out one and allowing seven hits.
