HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: CORNING PICKS UP NON-LEAGUE VICTORY OVER WILLIAMSON (24 PHOTOS) (2024-04-25)
Southern Tier Sports Report CORNING — The Corning Hawks scored two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh on their way to a 6-1 win over Williamson in non-league action on Thursday.
Both teams were tied at one after the first inning before the Hawks, who are 7-2 on the year and ranked 12th in Class AAA in the state, pulled away late for the win.
Emelia Smith and Matti Johnston had RBI singles in the fifth inning for Corning.
In the seventh Sophia Schoonover scored in a wild pitch, Emelia Smith scored from third on a dropped third strike with Sophia Polzella hitting. Peyton Sullivan then homered to cap the scoring.
Sullivan had a triple and a home run, an RBI and a run scored and Johnston had two hits and an RBI.
Smith had two hits, with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Schoonover had a hit and scored two runs.
Lauren DeRosa had a hit and Polzella had an RBI and scored a run.
Sullivan worked 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing two hits and one run. Johnston worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit, striking out six.
Corning plays in the Mary Testa Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Saturday at Chenango Valley High School. They take on Abington Heights (Pa.) at noon and Chenango Valley at 2 p.m. All proceeds go to the St. Jude’s Foundation. ———— PHOTOS BY SHEILA SUTTON.
