HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: STATE-RANKED CORNING DOWNS ELMIRA (24 PHOTOS) (2024-04-25)

CORNING — The state-ranked Corning Hawks picked up an 8-6 win over Elmira on Wednesday afternoon.

Corning, ranked 12th in the state in Class AAA, scored five runs between the fifth and sixth innings to pick up the win.

Elmira struck first in the third inning. Addison Taft doubled and Marley Devlin doubled to center to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the third Sophia Schoonover reached on an error and after a Smith single, Sophia Polzella doubled home two runs.

Elmira tied the game in the fourth as Annabelle Decker walked and Hailey Greene bunted and reached on an error. Decker scored on a ground ball off the bat of Ava Sherman. Taft then hit a sacrifice fly to put Elmira up 3-2. Ryleigh Ogden then singled home Sherman to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the fourth Lauren DeRosa tripled and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Corning tied the game in the fifth as Peyton Sullivan drew a two-out walk and after Daphne Sherman walked, Kendall Curreri singled home Sullivan. DeRosa then walked to load the bases and Kayleigh Sparks hit a two-run single to make it 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth Emelia Smith singled and with one out Matti Johnston hit a two-run home run.

In the seventh Taft reached on an error and Ogden singled, and then Devlin hit a two-run single.

Elmira had the go-ahead run at the plate, but Johnston got the final two outs of the game.

Sullivan worked 3 1/3 innings, striking out one and allowing four hits. Johnston worked 3 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing three hits.

Smith had two hits, with a run scored and Sparks, DeRosa, Curreri, Johnston and Polzella all had hits. Polzella, Johnston and Sparks had two RBI each and Johnston, Sullivan, Sherman, Curreri, DeRosa, Schoonover and Smith scored runs.

Devlin worked 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing six hits for Elmira and Ava Cornacchio got two outs, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Ogden and Devlin had two hits each for Elmira, with Devlin driving in three and Ogden getting an RBI and a run scored.

Sherman and Taft each had hits, both had RBI and both had runs scored, Taft scoring twice. Greene and Decker also scored runs.
