COLLEGE WRESTLING: LOCAL GRADS FIND SUCCESS FOR D1 LIU (2024-01-10)
Southern Tier Sports ReportCorning graduate Drew Witham won his most recent dual meet for Division I LIU as he won a 10-3 major decision at 149 pounds against Edinboro, in a 29-3 win.
In the most recent tournament, the David H Lehman/Franklin & Marshall Open Witham opened with a 4-1 win, before falling 9-2. Witham then won 5-0 and 11-1, over Kaden Setzer, a graduate of nearby Athens, of Kent State. Witham then fell in the consi of 16 #2.
Elmira graduate Donavan Smith wrestled at 165 pounds, opening with a 16-10 win and then reaching the round of 16 with a 19-4 technical fall win. He fell to the second seed 10-0 in his next match. Smith then fell 9-4 in the consi of 16 #2.
Witham has lost three tough one-point matches in dual meets this year.
In the match before that, against Bloomsbury, Witham lost a tough 2-1 match to Bloomsburg’s Cade Balestrini.
Witham was 1-2 at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invite, winning a 12-0 major decision during the tournament.
In a loss to Binghamton Witham lost a tough 4-3 match to Michael Zarif.
Against Virginia the Corning grad fell 7-6 to Michael Gioffre at 149.
Witham had a 7-0 win against Sacred Heart and a 14-10 loss against Buffalo.
Smith wrestled in the Black Knight Invite for LIU, going 0-2 on the day at 157 pounds.
Smith was 2-2 at the Journeyman, with a win by fall over Kyler Crawford of Pitt-Johnstown in 4:58 and a 5-1 win over Anthony Micci of Franklin & Marshall.
