Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA — Sophia Bonnell hit three straight threes in the second quarter and the Horseheads Blue Raiders held off Elmira 52-37 on Saturday in the fifth-place game at the Josh Palmer Fund Clarion Classic.

Horseheads led 16-6 after one quarter and they led 32-17 at the half. Bonnell hit three straight threes in the second and had 12 in the quarter as Horseheads extended the lead to 20.

However, Elmira started to fight back, outscoring Horseheads 16-8 in the third and they got within three in the second half.

Jordyn Gross had 19 points for Horseheads, with five boards, and Bonnell had 18 points, hitting three threes in the game. She had four boards and three assists. Gross had 10 of her points in the fourth quarter, scoring all but two of her teams points in the quarter, going 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch. She was 7-for-7 from the line in the game.

Bonnell made the all-tournament team for the national division.

Megan Wolf had six points and Jessica Als had three points, while Madison Ribble, Alexis Knox and Emma Kamas all had two points for the Blue Raiders.

Mariah Matias led Elmira with 20 points, adding nine boards, an assist and two steals. She had nine of her points in the third quarter.

Caitlyn Wagner had five points for Elmira and Ellie Clearwater and Addison Taft each had four points. Clearwater had seven boards.

Ashaya Wallace had two points in the game.

“Super proud of the girls after the ugly first half,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “WE cut the lead to three and had some momentum, but then Andy and Horseheads did a great job regaining their composure in the fourth quarter.

“We still have some things to work on to get better, but I will never question the fight of our kids.”
