JOSH PALMER FUND CLARION CLASSIC BOYS' BASKETBALL: NOTRE DAME FALLS IN REGIONAL FINAL AS PARKER MAKES ALL-TOURNEY TEAM, SCHWEIZER NAMED 6TH MAN OF TOURNEY (24 PHOTOS) (2023-12-30)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — A pair of dominant defensive performances, and a red-hot week by Karson Dominick helped the NP-Mansfield boys’ basketball team win the boys’ regional division 1 title at the Josh Palmer Fund Clarion Classic on Saturday.
NP-Mansfield won the title with a 65-30 win over Notre Dame on Saturday.
“It’s really fun,” Dominick said. “See a lot of different teams here, it’s a little different, you’ve got a shot lock. It’s a little faster paced than we are used to. But, we came out, we played great team defense. We held people under 40 points every game. Defense wins championships.”
Jeremiah Parker led Notre Dame with seven points and five boards and Finn Schweizer had five points and four boards. Luke Richards had six points and Vinny Campanelli had four points.
Jackson Potter had three points and three boards and Amos Abidon and Liam Schweizer each had two points, while Calbe White had a point.
Schweizer was named sixth man of the division and Parker made the all-tournament team.
While the defense was shutting teams down, the offense was behind led by Dominick, who averaged 30 points a game to earn MVP honors in the division. Dominick had 29 points against Notre Dame, adding seven boards, four assists and two steals. That comes after a 31-point game against Edison in the tourney opener, which included 23 points in one quarter in that game.
“That first game I started feeling it in the third quarter, had 23, but good team win, both games,” Dominick said.
It’s two straight years with a tourney title for NP-Mansfield.
“Feels great, back-to-back for us,” Dominick said.
Cooper Shaw had 15 points and 12 boards for NP-Mansfield and Brady Stetter had 16 points and seven boards.
Jason Harer and Tayton Strange each had two points for NP-Mansfield and Cade Kurzejewski had a point.
The win is something that Dominick feels like can help the team going forward.
“It gives us momentum going into league games,” Dominick said. “Because we are feeling it right now. We are playing great basketball together. Great guys, great coaching staff, we are rolling right now.”
Brady Stetter won the top defensive player award for the division and Shaw made the all-tournament team.
