Southern Tier Sports Report OWEGO — Freshman Mariah Matias had a game-high 18 points and the Elmira girls’ basketball team opened the season with a 59-39 win over Maine-Endwell in the semifinals of the Charlie Sibley Memorial Tournament.

“A little opening game jitters to start, but a 19-2 third-quarter showed us what we want to look like this year,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “But, always nice to open the year with a win.”
Elmira led 28-26 at the half, but used a 19-2 third quarter to pick up the win.
Caitlyn Wagner had four points for Elmira and Miley Baker finished with three points.
Matias and Clearwater had six points each in the big third-quarter run and Wallace had five points, with a three in the quarter.
