HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: HORSEHEADS EXCITED AS THEY PREPARE FOR A NEW SEASON (24 PHOTOS) (2023-11-21)

Southern Tier Sports Report
HORSEHEADS — The excitement level is high as the Horseheads wrestling team got back in the wrestling room last week to begin practices for a new season.

“It’s great,” Horseheads coach Brett Owen said. “Coach (Troy) Monks started off with (the question) who didn’t sleep. I was up late last night preparing. Was up early this morning. Didn’t really work at my job today, was doing more stuff for this.

“The excitement is here to see the guys. I don’t teach here, so I don’t always see them. To walk in and see their faces smiling is great.”

The numbers are good, for both the boys and girls, as the Blue Raiders prepare for the season.

“We are right under 50,” Owen said. “The high school I think on the girls we have right around 25. A lot of kids are coming out. A lot of new kids. A lot of kids I haven’t even had in the room before. It’s going to be exciting.”

Horseheads opens the season Dec. 1-2 at the Mark Stephens Classic. The JV team gets the season started this Saturday at the Friends of Section IV Tournament in Waverly.
