HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SWIMMING & DIVING: HORSEHEADS WINS CLASS A TITLE; CORNING'S MCKANE SETS FOUR RECORDS (2023-10-15)

ELMIRA — The Horseheads girls won the Class A title, while Angie McKane and Brooke Terwilliger again had record-setting meets for Corning at the Elmira Invitational.

Horseheads won Class A at 342, followed by Corning at 314 and Ithaca at 245. U-E was at 167 and Elmira finished at 116.

Notre Dame was third for Class C at 165.

McKane broke her own pool record in the 50 free, swimming a 23.18, to break the old mark of 23.62.

She broke the 1990 100 back record of 58.17 by Sarah Newman as she swam a 55.86. As the leadoff of the 400 free relay she broke the 1993 Beth Timmons 100 free record of 52.42. McKane swam 51.56.

McKane was named the swimmer of the meet.

Terwilliger broke her own pool record in the diving at 538.75 for 11 dives.

Cella McLaughlin of Corning was third at 450.00 followed by Britney Wheeler of Horseheads at 429.55. Horseheads’ Ella Blowers was sixth at 379.95 followed by Corning’s Nicole Gaskievicz at 346.95 and Wendy Lynch at 337.15.

In the 200 medley relay Corning’s McKane, Erika Liu, Kara Peters and Maria Kuksenkova won in 1:56.19, while Horseheads’ Ali Mosher, Genevieve Carro, MacKenzie Grover and Elise Levantovich took fourth in 2:06.51.

Elmira’s Payton Dotts, Maren Novotny, Madelyn Cavalier and Ava Sherman took sixth in 2:10.62, while Notre Dame’s Alexis Collins, Hannah Gonzalez, Leah Gonzalez and Isabella Mashewske took ninth in 2:19.78.

Peters was second in the 200 free in 2:05.09 and Horseheads’ Genevieve Carro was fifth in 2:11.82 followed by teammates Lily Hall (2:14.38), Levantovich (22:14.42) and Mosher (2:16.32). Cavalier was 10th in 2:18.14.

Mia Carro was second in the 200 IM in 2:24.41 and Elmira’s Novotny was eighth in 2:42.97 followed by Liu at 2:45.35 and Horseheads’ Olivia Schwab was 10th in 2:46.66.

McKane won the 50 free with her 23.18 while Horseheads’ Sibby Lowe was fourth in 25.01. Anna Lowe was seventh in 25.85, Kuksenkova was ninth in 27.45 followed by Sherman in 27.58.

Sibby Lowe won the 100 fly in 1:00.66 with Mia Carro third at 1:04.28. Cavalier was fourth in 1:08.13 and Corning’s Nicole Miller was sixth in 1:13.34 followed by Schwab in 1:13.44. Ava Knowlton was ninth in 1:16.65.

Anna Lowe was second in the 100 free in 57.33 with Kuksenkova fourth at 59.85 followed by Collins in 59.89. Horseheads’ Grover was 10th in 1:02.51.

Peters won the 500 free in 5:22.18 with Hall fifth in 5:58.41 and Levantovich sixth in 6:06.91. Ellie Ballard of Corning was seventh at 6:12.05.

Sibby and Anna Lowe and Mia and Genevieve Carro took second in the 200 free relay in 1:43.44 and Cavalier, Ellie Johnson, Novotny and Sherman took fourth in 1:54.63, while Devin Price, Kelsey McCarthy, Mia Caparella and Ballard took eighth in 1:59.21.

McKane won the 100 back with her 55.86 and Mosher was sixth in 1:05.43 followed by Miller (1:08.81) and Corning teammates Reese Conway (1:10.49) and Morgan Dahlman (1:13.00).

Liu was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.48 with Genevieve Carro sixth in 1:20.50.

Sibby and Anna Lowe, Mia Carro and Levantovich took third in the 400 free relay in 3:51.76 followed by Corning’s McKane, Peters, Kuksenkova and Cat Riesbeck at 3:53.50. Notre Dame’s Collins, Hannah Gonzalez, Leah Gonzalez and Mashewske took seventh in 4:26.56.
