HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: HORSEHEADS TOPS ITHACA TO CLAIM FIRST STAC WEST TITLE IN 13 YEARS (15 PHOTOS) (October 7, 2023)
Southern Tier Sports Report ITHACA — The Horseheads girls’ soccer team won their first STAC West title in 13 years on Friday as they topped Ithaca 3-0.
Katie Miley had two goals for Horseheads in the win Friday and Maddie Ribble added a goal.
“The girls work so hard and to see it pay off is great,” Horseheads coach Lee Spencer said. “Phenomenal team win, the bench was electrified and it carried to everyone on the field. I could not be prouder.”
The players on the team know this group is special.
“It feels great,” Sophia Bonnell said. “Really special and fun group of girls. Wouldn’t want to have done it with any other team.”
The players are proud to have accomplished something that hasn’t happened since before many of them were even in kindergarten.
“It’s definitely a great feeing knowing that we were the team to do it,” Megan Wolf said. “We really have a special group of girls that has lots of fun together, but we always get the job done. Personally, I believe we couldn’t have done it without our coaches, our team leaders and Ava (Fairbrother) our goalie.
“The hard work at practices is paying off and you can see that with our play on the field. This team is an amazing group and every single one of us contributed. In some way. Excited to keep going.” —— PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE KROHMALNEY
