HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: ELMIRA FALLS ON THE ROAD AT WAVERLY (24 PHOTOS) (2023-09-22) Southern Tier Sports Report WAVERLY — The Elmira Express went on the road against a team that was in the Class C State Final Four last year and they came up short, 45-8 against Waverly.
Joey Tomasso hit Xavier Watson to start the scoring for Waverly at 6:18 of the opening quarter on a 40-yard touchdown. Hogan Shaw hit the extra point.
Shaw hit a 39-yard field goal with 1:46 left in the opening quarter and it was 10-0 Waverly.
The Express got within 10-8 as Evan Garvin ran in from 29 yards out and Kayon Flint ran in the two-point try at 10:38 of the second quarter.
Tomasso had a 69-yard run and Shaw hit the extra point with 9:12 left in the half to put Waverly up 17-8.
Tomasso hit Jake VanHouten on a three-yard score at 3:55 and then he hit Kolsen Keathley on a 27-yard touchdown with 2:05 left in the half to make it 31-8.
Tomasso hit Jay Pipher on a 63-yard score at 8:20 of the third quarter and then Payton Fravel had a nine-yard run with 4:28 left.
Garvin ran 13 times for 96 yards and a score and Bryan Brooks had nine carries for 46 yards. Flint ran for 26 yards on six carries and Dash Harris ran for 83 on 13 carries.
Garvin threw for six yards.
Tomasso threw for 317 yards and four scores for Waverly, going 19-for-24 passing. He also ran for 73 yards and a score.
