HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: HORSEHEADS GAINS OVER 550 YARDS AS THEY TOP NORWICH TO MOVE TO 4-0 (2023-09-23)
Southern Tier Sports ReportNORWICH — The Horseheads Blue Raiders threw for over 200 yards and ran for over 350 yards as they moved to 4-0 with a 49-21 win at Norwich.
“These long trips take a toll on you,” Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman said. “Nice to come up here, get the job done. We came up here to do a job and the boys did a nice job.”
Two players ran for over 100 yards in the game and Dominic Cardinale threw for 204 yards.
“I thought we did a nice job of kind of mixing it up at times,” Hillman said. “The guys did a nice job of making some nice plays out there. I’ definitely happy with what we did offensively.”
Horseheads struck first as Bradock Salisbury scored on a 28-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter and Trevor Reidy made the extra point.
Norwich had a touchdown pass in the second quarter to tie things up. Josh McCawley then had a five-yard run and Reidy made the kick and Salisbury had a six-yard run, with Reidy making the kick as the Blue Raiders led 21-7 at the half.
Salisbury scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter and then Lucas Mosher had a three-yard run with Cardinale hitting Finn Scanlon-Shaw on the two-point try.
Miles Woodhouse then caught a 50-yard touchdown from Cardinale and Reidy hit the extra point.
Norwich had a touchdown pass in the fourth, before McCawley had an eight-yard scoring run and Reidy hit the extra point. Norwich capped the scoring on a five-yard run.
Salisbury ran six ties for 110 yards and three scores and had three catches for 27 yards.
McCawley had 18 carries for 105 yards and two scores.
Scanlon Shaw had five carries for 52 yards and had three catches for 61 yards. Cardinale had six carries for 41 yards and was 12-for-16 passing for 204 yards and a score.
Mosher gained 67 yards on seven carries with a score and Woodhouse had five grabs of 89 yards and a score, while Griffin Stevens had a 27-yard catch.
“If you would have told me we’d be 4-0 going into rivalry games, league games coming up, I’d take that any day of the week,” Hillman said. “That said, we still have a lot of work to do, a lot of things to clean up. If we want to keep this rolling we have a lot of things we need to fix.”
The Blue Raiders are back home after playing two long road trips in a row as they’ll host Elmira next week.
“It’s definitely nice to finally have a hoe game and not have to travel a couple hours, it’s nice to know we do not have to go anywhere, to get back ready for Elmira, which is an emotional rivalry game, it’s going to be a war,” Hillman said.
