HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: CORNING GETS ANOTHER TOUGH TEST AGAINST STATE POWER M-E (2023-09-22)

Southern Tier Sports Report
The tough stretch of games to start the season for the Corning football team continues as they face the top ranked Class B team in the state with Maine-Endwell coming to town.

The Hawks started the year with a tough loss on the road at Cicero North Syracuse. Last week they led 16-0 on Christian Brothers Academy, and led through the third quarter, before falling late to the state ranked team.

“Focused and ready to get back at it,” Corning coach Mike Johnston Jr. said of this week. “We made big strides from week one to week two and want to keep improving against great competition.”

For Corning last week was a good step forward as they improved from the first game.

“Improved in all facets last week vs. CBA,” Johnston Jr. said. “We need to keep getting better each week.”

Things don’t get easier for Corning this week as they face a team that won states last year and is a perennial state power.

“There is a reason they are No. 1 in New York State,” Johnston Jr. said. “They are really well coached, spend a tremendous amount of time in the weight room. Disciplined on both sides of the ball and have several all-state players and D1 committed players anchoring their line.”

On offense the Hawks know they have to control the clock.

“Continue to sustain drives, eat clock, mix the pass in with the run, take care of the football,” Johnston Jr. said.

On defense the team knows they can’t make mistakes.

“Be disciplined against their triple option offense,” Johnston Jr. said. “Limit big plays, contain their athletes, tackle on first contact, create turnovers, alignment and assignment.”
