HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' SOCCER: CORNING'S SCORING MACHINE MAKING GOAL-SCORING HISTORY (2023-09-18)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportAs the ball flies into the net Carter Rosno turns and makes the walk back to midfield.
There is no celebration. No jumping up and down, pumping his fist or shouting in joy, despite the milestones that the senior keeps reaching.
The Hawks senior has already had a season for the ages, and it’s just halfway into the year.
Earlier this year Rosno broke the school record for goals, the old record was 41 by Zach Quist.
He now has 25 goals this year and 57 for his career.
Every time he scores a goal, whether it’s 1, 25, 43 or 55 Rosno acts the same way, turns and walks back to midfield, maybe a slight slap of the hands with a teammate.
“I learned when I was really young and my coach told me never celebrate,” Rosno said. “Just act like you score a lot and when you score a goal it’s nothing new to you.”
The Hawks senior also knows that the sport can change in a second, so you just take everything in stride.
“You can go up one, then you get scored on, so you don’t react to be honest,” Rosno said. “Just play the game.”
For Rosno, the record wasn’t something he really thought about in the past.
“It feels good, but honestly no one really cared about the record,’ Rosno said. “I honestly don’t think about it until someone brings it up to me, until someone says, ‘oh, you are the one who broke it.’”
The milestone is special for Rosno because he knows this is something he can share with hi teammates.
“I get a lot of tap in stuff,” Rosno said. “My teammates assist me. It has helped me to get to this. They can all say they were part of it.”
For Rosno there have been a lot of great players over the year that he’s learned from.
“I was really young, and I learned a lot of stuff from Micah (Cornfield),” Rosno said.
While 41 may not have been a number that was on Rosno’s radar, the milestone he just eclipsed, 55, was.
In high school Carter’s dad, Jason, scored 55 career goals at Bradford High School. That was a number that Carter has had in his sights for a while.
“My dad had 55 at his school so I was trying to break that record,” Carter Rosno said. “To be honest, it wasn’t really my idea to break the school record, it was to break my dad’s record, that’s what I was going for.”
Fifty-five goals was a number that Rosno heard a lot about over the years.
“My mom and dad talk about it all the time,” Rosno said.
And, now Rosno has the bragging rights in the family.
While Rosno’s dad was a soccer star it is how he motivates his son that’s made the impact on Carter’s career.
“He kind of pushes me,” Carter said. “When I got injured he was like you can get back in, you are fine, and he pushes me to be better.”
Rosno has a magical knack around the net for finding the perfect angle to score the goal. For the Hawks senior it’s been a lot of studying the sport that’s helped him as a scorer.
“I think I learned from some of the best just watching soccer, seeing what they do with the ball,” Rosno said. “And, honestly just playing, the more you play.”
As Rosno has racked up the goals in his career he’s found teas keying on him more and more.
“I think yeah, start of the game they pick you out right away,” Rosno said. “You are obviously the big scorer, you have the record and they mark you harder.”
Things are a bit different for Rosno this year as he’s one of the senior leaders on a team with a lot of new faces.
“Last year, the whole team, we all looked the same, and now the team is a little younger and I kind of stand out a little on top,” Rosno said. “This year they rely on me a lot. Last year the whole team, we had a really good team, and they just pushed me in practice too.”
Having the defense the Hawks have this year, and in past years, has made Rosno a better player.
“Our defense, we play against them in practice every day and they are probably one of the best defenses in the area,” Rosno said. “They make me better.”
Now that Rosno has the record, and has gone over 55 goals, the hope is to put the record at a hard-to-reach number.
“Hopefully I put it up at a really high number, untouchable for a while,” Rosno said.
Whether the record ends up at 60, 70, 80 or above, it’s something that Rosno knows younger players can strive to reach themselves in the future.
“It gives them something to strive for, something to be,” Rosno said.
And, the more success Rosno has he hopes it starts to get the attention of college coaches.
“I have been trying to go to college, not successful right now,” he said. “That’s what I’m trying to do right now, trying to make a big statement of what my name is.”
And, it’s a statement that’s being made not just by the number of goals, but by the success the Hawks are having.
The Hawks are currently unbeaten, and ranked sixth in the state in Class AAA. They recently picked up an overtime win over Ithaca, ranked fourth in the state in AA.
For Corning they are still learning what this team is capable of.
“I think we are really hard on ourselves in practice over little mistakes,” Rosno said. “Then we take it out to the game and we don’t really realize how good we are as a team.”
The Hawks have had a lot of success the past two years, but Rosno is hoping for even more this year.
“I think we can compete with against anyone if we play composed and together,” Rosno said. “I have lost regional finals two times and I hope we go there again and get to regional finals and move on.”
