HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: CORNING GETS OFF TO FAST START, BEFORE CBA RALLIES FOR WIN (2023-09-16)

CORNING — The Corning Hawks led 16-0 to start the game, and still held the lead into the fourth quarter, but 11 fourth-quarter points proved to be the difference as CBA topped Corning 49-40 on Friday night.

Going against the 11th ranked Class AA school in the state, who beat Union-Endicott 56-0 a week ago, the Hawks jumped out to leads of 16-0 and 24-9, and led 40-31 in the third quarter.

The Hawks started first as A.J. Thomas scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Brody Wolfe ran in the two-point try to make it 8-0.

James Freeman hauled in an 18-yard touchdown from Ian Harpster and Thomas had the two-point run to make it 16-0.

CBA caught Harpster in the end zone for a safety and then Duante Bacheyle caught a 19-yard touchdown from Porter Matt and Everett Gilchrist hit the extra point and it was 16-9 after one quarter.

Corning added to their lead as Freeman ran in a 46-yard touchdown and he had the two-point run to make it 24-9.

Isaiah Coleman caught a 58-yard touchdown from Matt and Syair Torrence, a Michigan State commit, caught a two-point pass from Matt.

Bacheyle caught a 27-yard touchdown from Matt and Gilchrist hit the extra point to make point to tie the game at 24.

Jaier Handford caught a 35-yard pass from Matt and Gilchrist hit the extra point to put CBA up 31-24.

Freeman hauled in a 72-yard pass from Harpster and Thomas had the two-point run and Corning took a 32-31 lead.

Wolfe had a seven-yard run and Freeman caught the two-point pass from Harpster at 3:49 of the third quarter to put Corning up 40-31.

1:10 later Torrence caught a 30-yard touchdown from Matt to cut the Corning lead to 40-38.

At 9:26 of the fourth Handford had a one-yard run and Matt ran in the two-point try, then Gilchrist hit a field goal from 45 yards out to cap the scoring.

Freeman ran for 163 yards on 18 carries for Corning and Thomas ran for 52 on 13 carries, while Wolfe had 74 on 15 and Brenden Jardin-Reed had nine on three carries.

Harpster was 2-for-7 for 90 yards and two scores, with both catches by Freeman for 90 yards and the two scores.

Handford ran for 55 yards for CBA and Matt was 22-for-31 passing for 358 yards and five scores. Handford had seven grabs for 102 yards and Torrence had seven for 86, while Darien Williams had 55 on four catches, Bacheyle had two for 46 and Coleman had a 58 yard catch.
