HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: CORNING GIRLS EDGE ELMIRA, 2-1 (2023-09-15)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA — The Corning girls’ soccer team edged Elmira 2-1 on Friday night.

“It was a hard fought battle. We played a strong first half and played with skill and composure. The second half Elmira played with great intensity. We faced some adversity in the second half and rallied around each other to come away with the win.

“Grace Robertson scored an awesome goal in the first half and played outstanding defense throughout the game. Sophia Resue crossed a ball that hit off a defender for the second goal. We finished a hard week with two wins and I could not be more proud of our grit and determination.”

Mia Capilli scored the Elmira goal off a corner kick.

The Hawks got a strong effort from throughout the roster.

“Amanda Stephens had two game-changing saves and Rukma Chaudhurty, who went in with no warm up, also had a great save. Now we get some time to train before we face a tough Ithaca game next Friday. Maggie Calkins, Gwen Zimmerman, Hayden Robertson were exceptional throughout the game.”

Both coaches were happy with the effort in the game.

“Hard fought game,” Elmira coach Zach Sarno said. “Both teams battled in a close, classic STAC West game.”
