HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: CORNING PICKS UP VICTORY OVER ITHACA, 2-1 (2023-09-13)

Southern Tier Sports Report
CORNING — A goal by Maggie Calkins proved to be the game winner for Corning on Wednesday night as they topped Ithaca 2-1.

“Tonight was a team win,” Corning coach Julie Pierce said. “Ithaca is a strong passing team. It took our whole team to win tonight. Grace Robertson played strong defense in the second half to help secure the win. Lilia Mack and Leila Ianovici were key players in the midfield.

“Our first goal came off a cross from Lilia Mack and Sophia Resue made a great run to get the goal. Maggie Calkins had a great goal off a direct kick to get the win. Right now we are figuring a lot out and switching formations. I am proud of how the team is responding to new challenges. We were down and fought hard throughout the game.”

Resue and Calkins had the two Corning goals, both off Mack assists.

Aicha Risse had a goal for Ithaca.

Both teams had six shots in the game. Amanda Stephens had five saves in goal for Corning and Ithaca had three saves in net.

The Hawks are at Elmira on Friday night.
