COLLEGE BASKETBALL: ELMIRA'S BROOKS COMMITTS TO SIGN AT ONONDAGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE (2023-07-20)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportFormer Elmira standout Anthony Brooks will get back on the basketball court in the winter as he committed to play at Onondaga Community College.
“I decided Onondaga was the best fit because of what they needed,” he said. “They had guys move on and it was perfect timing for me to come along and fill in those gaps.”
After a year away from basketball, Brooks is ready to get back to the sport.
“At first I took a break from basketball, I figured it was time too (get back),” he said. “I was just in the weight room trying to get bigger. But, the past two months I’ve been working on my game everyday. The main focus has been getting my three-point shot to become consistent. So, I’ve been getting in a lot of reps.
“I’m more than excited for my return, it’s been a long year. Plenty of ups and downs, but I look at it as if I can get through it, it will show how resilient and dedicated I am so I have been really focused on making sure I’m ready.”
After a year away it just makes Brooks appreciate the chance to play in college even more.
“I’ve been super excited too get back out there,” Brooks said. “A lot of guys don’t get the chance too play after high school and after sitting out this year I won’t take playing basketball in general for granted again.”
Brooks will have one of his old teammates with him when he plays as Seth Myles was a starter for Onondaga last season.
“Me and Seth grew up together, we played AAU from sixth grade until high school and then we played high school together every year, even got pulled up to varsity at the same time, so I’m super excited to team up with my guy again,” Brooks said. “Somebody I can look up to as a brother, so being on the same team as somebody I grew up with can definitely make things easier, we’ve been in the gym a lot since he’s been home, getting ready and talking about goals just super excited to get there.”
For Brooks there will also be a lot of old teammates and opponents that he’ll play against in the league.
“It’s always fun to match up with old buddies, teammates and sometimes enemies, so I can imagine it will be very fun to go head to head with familiar faces,” Brooks said.
