STSR PRESENTS THE DRAKE HVAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: ELMIRA'S MORDVINOVA AND CORNING'S RUFFIN & CORNFIELD (2023-06-06)

Southern Tier Sports Report
There were a lot of great performances this week, leading to some tough choices for the athlete of the week honors. In the end, it was Elmira’s Vicky Mordvinova and Corning’s Gyasi Ruffin and Gabe Cornfield who are the Southern Tier Sports Report, sponsored by Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning, Athletes of the Week.

VICKY MORDVINOVA
ELMIRA, TRACK AND FIELD
Won both the 800 and 1500 at the Section IV Track and Field state qualifiers.

Shattered her own school records in the 800 meters in 2:11.74, beating the field by almost six seconds. Won the 1500 in 4:40.53, topping the field by nearly seven seconds in the event. The time in the 800 is the sixth feast in the state this season.

GABE CORNFIELD
CORNING, TRACK AND FIELD
Won the 3000 meter steeple chase in 9:38.79 at the state qualifiers.

Was also part of the Hawks’ 4x800 relay that ran 7:58.89 to win the state qualifier. The Hawks are the defending state champions in the event. It is the seventh fastest time in the state this year in the event.
 
GYASI RUFFIN
CORNING, TRACK AND FIELD
Won the 400 meters at the state qualifier in 50.13 seconds.

Was also part of the Hawks 4x400 relay team that won the state qualifier in 3:24.98. It’s one of the 10 fastest times in the state this year in the event.
