REXFORD — Corning seventh-grader Delaney Abel led partway through the first round of the New York State Girls’ Golf Championships, and sits top 20 after one round at The Edison Club on Sunday.

Abel led after the first eight holes and she finished the day with an 80 to sit tied for 14th at eight-over-par.

“Daleny played exceptionally today,” Clark said. “After the first eight holes, Delaney was the solo leader of the tournament according to online scoring. Once she made the turn and the pace of play slowed down she had a rough time adjusting.

“Thanks to a great birdie on 17 Delaney managed to salvage and 80 and currently sits 14th heading into tomorrow. She is very excited about her play so far and looks forward to tomorrow.”

Defending state champion Kennedy Swedick, of Albany Academy for Girls, is in the lead at 2-under 70.

Section 4 sits eighth at +138 for the day. Section One leads at +36.

Horseheads sits eighth as a team at 405, +117, they are just 12 shots out of being top six.

Brooklyn Moffe is tied for 49th at 92 and Mady Weigand shot a 99 to tie for 74th on day one. Olivia Hatch shot 104 and Ava Fairbrother shot 110.
