CORNING BOYS AND GIRLS RUGBY TEAMS EACH PICK UP RECENT WINS (2023-06-02)

Southern Tier Sports Report
FORT NIAGARA, YOUNGSTOWN — Corning Girls Rugby defeated Hamburg Rugby Club 62-0 recently in a league match. The match was played as a showcase game during the Buffalove Women’s Rugby Tournament.

The Lions received the opening kickoff and two minutes into the match Tori Holmes found the try line for the opening score of the match. The Lions would not take the foot off the pedal as they would go on to score six more tries in the first half.

The match was dominated by the Lions due to the play and leadership of Senior Flyhalf Kathryn Ouyang. Ouyang helped pace the Lions attack with her crisp passing, timely runs, and putting the Hamburg defense on the back foot with her brilliant kicking. Ouyang also led the defensive effort with Kaegan Rhodes and Amanda Stephens to help preserve the shutout.

Seventh grader Desirae Stickler and Junior Liv Zawko scored their first Varsity tries.

Try scorers on the day were; Holmes, Ouyang, Zawko, Stickler, Kendra Close, Zoe Harmer, Julia Gridley, Ella Cosier, and Stephens who had two tries on the day. Gridley would go 6/10 on conversions for the day, capping off a 17-point effort.

The “Woman of the Match” was Kathryn Ouyang.

Corning Boys Rugby Blanks Grand Island on the Road
GRAND ISLAND — Corning Boys Rugby defeated Grand Island Rugby Club 47-0 recently in a rain soaked league match.

The Lions made the most of a windy and rainy day in Western New York. With less than ideal conditions, the Lions capitalized on a young Grand Island team's turnovers, while limiting their own.
Sophomore Flyhalf Will Fortune opened up the scoring by chasing down a loose ball in the try zone and narrowly edging a Grand Island defender to dot it down for five points. A few minutes later, Corning found themselves close to the try line. As the forwards secured the ball and inched closer to the try line, Freshman Logan Wheeler found a seam and scored his first varsity try. Corning’s scoring would be capped off by Senior Sam Palmesano’s heads up play in the scrum and diving over for the final score of the day.

With the conditions limiting big plays, the Lions took to dominating the middle of the field. Junior Jacob Rodriguez led the forwards efforts by carrying the ball and leading the teams in meters gained on the day. Rodriguez would eventually cross the try line and score on one of his many runs.

Try scorers on the day were; Fortune, Wheeler, Palmesano, Rodriguez, Gage Machuga, Chase Caward, and Matt Hoffman-Bellucci. Fortune went 6/7 on conversions, capping off a 17-point day.
The “Man of the Match” was Jacob Rodriguez.

The Lions are at home Sunday, May 7th in a non-league match against Orchard Park Rugby at East Campbell Town Park. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
