ENDICOTT — Gyasi.Ruffin and Cage Hogue each won titles, and Marcus Homa and Zuri Ruffin also qualified for states on the first day of the Section IV State Qualifier at Union-Endicott.

Gyasi Ruffin won the 400 in 50.13. Nicholas Schneider was 12th in 53.01 and Ethan Ferrie was 15th in 54.02.

“I was pretty anxious going in because I have been cross training a little bit over the past week,” Ruffin said. “But, my coach always does a great job of reminding me to be confident and reminding me of my race plan and I think I executed the best I could today and you see the result.”

Ruffin finished strong to bring home the win on Wednesday.

“That last 200 is always going to burn, but the way I like to think about it is no matter what pace you get out at, the last two is always going to hurt so you just have to go for it,” Ruffin said. “Stay relaxed and push through the pain and that’s what the 400 is all about.”

Ruffin won the state title in the 600 indoor and he’s hoping to now go and earn a state medal outdoors in the 400.

“Going to states is going to be the 400, and coming off a good place in the 600 for indoor I would like to go for the same thing in the four,” Ruffin said. “I would like to medal at states in the four.”

Hogue won the discus with a big PR of 146-feet.

Homa was the top Division I runner in the 3200 in 9:35.24 to make it to states. Gregory Homa was seventh in 9:55.69. Nicholas Ferratella was 16th in 10:40.36.

Zuri Ruffin was second in the long jump, tops in Division I, with a leap of 20-feet, 9-inches to make states.

In the pentathlon Brady Hughes sits second after three of the five events with a score of 1,896. He’s just 27 points behind Noah Ruffer of Horseheads.

Tevin McLaren was second in the 800 with a PR of 1:56.69. Joseph Caruso was fourth in 1:58.98 with DJ Cornfield seventh in 2:01.48.

In the pole vault Nathaniel Jennings was fourth at 13-feet, 4-inches with Alex Kolpien eighth at 12-feet, 6-inches.

Hugo Mazzali was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 58.60 and Adrian Blouin was 18th at 1:04.52.
