HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: CORNING FALLS TO DEFENDING STATE CHAMPS IN REGIONAL PLAY (21 PHOTOS) (2023-05-30)

ENDICOTT — In a matchup of the past two Class AA state champions, last year’s state champion Monroe-Woodbury topped Corning 13-2 in a regional matchup on Tuesday.

Monroe-Woodbury won last year’s state title and featured a Division I commit at pitcher. Corning, won the state title in 2019, and due to Covid there was no state tournament in 2020 or 2021.

Valerie Pedersen of Monroe-Woodbury had a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Tuesday at Union-Endicott High School.

Cortney Searfoss broke up the no hitter with one out in the seventh and Hayden Robertson followed with an RBI single. Lauren DeRosa and Jacqui Crisco, pinch running for Searfoss, scored for Corning. DeRosa had walked and scored on an error.

Pedersen struck out 15 and allowed two hits, two runs, one earned, and five walks for Monroe-Woodbury.

Peyton Sullivan struck out two on the mound for Corning and allowed 13 runs, just five earned.

Arianna Exarchakis had a 4-for-4 day for Monroe-Woodbury with a home run, a double, five RBI and three runs scored.

Searfoss and Maddie Dibble are the only two seniors for the Hawks on the roster. Corning also has just five juniors on the roster as 10 players are sophomores or younger, including three freshmen and an eighth grader.
