UPSL SOCCER: GAFFER CITY F.C. OPENS WITH 1-0 WIN ON THE ROAD (2023-05-17)
Southern Tier Sports ReportGaffer City F.C. scored in the 17th minute and the defense did the rest as they won their first game, topping Upstate United 1-0.
The goal came as Micah Cornfield crossed the ball to Keefer Calkins for the header.
“It was a great first night out,” Gaffer City F.C. coach Chad Freelove said. “Going to an away match against an established UPSL team and coming away with a 1-0 win, was great.
“We had some great buildups in the first half, including the buildup that led to our goal. On the goal, the ball was slipped through to Micah Cornfield (Roberts Wesleyan/Corning-Painted Post) to the corner resulting in a crossing pass to Keefer Calkins (Bloomsburg/Bath-Haverling) for the well-timed header.”
Carson Smith (Keuka College/Horseheads) kept a clean sheet in goal with help from defensive stalwarts Zach Dann (Keuka College/Corning-Painted Post), Liam Bayne (Corning-Painted Post), Steffen Kercher (University of Rhode Island/Corning-Painted Post), Connor Thorpe (Keuka College/Horseheads) along with support from Nate Tenbus in the midfield (Gannon University/Horseheads).
“We came away feeling good about the outcome and with an outlook of how we can address growth at tour training sessions,” Freelove said. “Our coaching staff is excited about what we saw and about where this team can be at the end of the UPSL season. It’s one step at a time and that next step is Black Rock IHC at Corning Community College on Saturday, May 27 at 11 a.m.”
